About Triangle of Sadness

Ruben Östlund's Triangle of Sadness (2022) is a brilliantly sharp satire that dissects modern capitalism, social hierarchies, and the absurdity of extreme wealth. The film follows fashion model couple Carl and Yaya, played with perfect vacuity and calculation by Harris Dickinson and the late Charlbi Dean, as they embark on a luxury cruise for the ultra-rich. The first act establishes the superficial dynamics of their relationship and the world of influencers, before the story sets sail into increasingly turbulent waters.

On the opulent yacht, the grotesque disparity between the obsequious, wealthy guests and the overworked crew is laid bare. The film's centerpiece is a spectacularly chaotic and visceral sequence during a stormy captain's dinner, where the ship's Marxist captain (a wonderfully deadpan Woody Harrelson) debates a Russian oligarch over dinner as seasickness overwhelms the decadent feast. This leads to a shocking reversal of fortune, stranding survivors on a desert island where the traditional power structures are completely inverted.

Östlund's direction is masterfully controlled, using long, observational takes to let the uncomfortable humor and social commentary breathe. The ensemble cast is uniformly excellent, navigating the tonal shift from cringe comedy to survival drama with precision. Triangle of Sadness is a must-watch for its fearless, provocative, and often hilariously uncomfortable examination of what we value in society. It's a film that entertains while leaving you with profound questions about power, beauty, and who really deserves to eat the last biscuit.
